The First Path of Initiation

As 2012 continues to unfold, the shifts for me, personally and professionally, are nothing short of uncertain. It should be, by all accounts, unsettling but I’ve grown quite comfortable in the uncertainty.

I’ve found the uncertainty allows me to create from a deeply soulful place, without expectations or boundaries.

I’m free, liberated.

But liberation did not come overnight - I had to pass a series of initiations. Initiations that I was not aware stood between who I was and who I desired to become.

The first path of initiation…

My own initiation began when I was drowning in a 30-something spiritual crisis. Forced to face the truth that my life was void of anything meaningful, I contemplated suicide. When I couldn’t find a decent, presentable and fool-proof way to off myself, the only remaining solution was to fix the life I had.

It wasn’t difficult. After all, I had spent 34 years building a life I didn’t even want.

Which made it easy to let it all go.

For the sake of the survival of my soul, my only concern was to spark some small reason to live. In my case, that was to do whatever it took to walk my path.

I was no longer concerned with climbing the corporate ladder, finishing up my bachelor’s degree, making wise investment choices, or buying a house - all the things I had been “told to do.” I didn’t even know I didn’t want those same things until my soul made it abundantly clear I was not walking my path.

I had only enough life left in me to ask what my soul wanted. What did it want to say? What did it want to experience? What plan did it have for me?

Although I didn’t realize it at the time, this was my first path of initiation: the sacred dawning of my spirit’s fire.

In honor of this pivotal awakening, I share a poem I recently read in Dancing the Dream by Jamie Sams, that sums up my personal first path of initiation perfectly:

THE FIRST PATH OF INITIATION

Sacred dawning of my spirit’s fire,
I open beyond self-centered desire.

I choose to serve and be
A shining example for all to see.

I honor the spirit in all living things.
I commit to the life that honesty brings.

I seek the truth that lives in me.
I respect the truths that others see.

I give to others with a happy heart
Asking no return for the gifts I impart.

I open my heart to others in need,
Walking my path as I plant love’s seeds.

I seek the truth that lives in me…

This simple declaration will set you upon the path to authentic rediscovery. I say rediscovery, because you’re never really lost. You, the real you, the spiritual you, has and always will be with you. It’s just been shrouded with veils.

Veils that have been shrouding your truth.

You are here to live your life, your truth, not someone else’s. It is imperative that your truth be unveiled. Not only for the survival, but the thriving, of your soul.

So for all the souls that find themselves lost, discouraged and weary in this earthly life, just as I did not so many years ago, I share a few pieces of wisdom from my own initiations.

Life is the initiation. Your spiritual initiation. Your deep desire for spiritual growth is what led you to this earthly life. It’s reserved for the bravest of souls. That includes you.
Follow your instinct. Your higher self knows more than you. It will always lead along the path you intended to walk.
There’s a lot of bullsh*t out there disguised as wisdom. Learn when to ignore and when to listen.
Do not give up. There is nothing you have to do. There is no one to please. Please yourself. This is not selfishness, this is your soul’s deepest desire - to experience life as it desires.

Follow your heart, walk your path, and all will be well.
